NORMAN, OK – The recent leaked video of a University of Oklahoma fraternity’s racist chant on a bus trip has resulted in many members of the group coming under fire for not joining in on the bigotry.
In an attempt to address the outrage expressed by the rest of the University and the State of Oklahoma, University President David Boren released the statement, “I understand that the members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon seen in the background of this video not doing anything are people who represent our University and our State in the eyes of the Nation, and I will not rest until our reputation of being overtly racist is fully restored.”
Boren continued to explain that he had already shut down the fraternity and expelled two students seen in the video the evening the video was released. “Hopefully this has shown that this institution has no tolerance for people who fail to express their intolerance, and I expect that any racist chants in the future will more fully represent what we stand for.”
This comment was uncharacteristically negative of fraternities for Boren, who is a strong advocate of fraternities and the ways they benefit colleges. “In addition to perpetuating institutional racism, our fraternities are a long-standing tradition at OU, and help maintain a class of elites and continue the process of gentrification in Norman.” Boren said later in his address, “Despite the racist chanting of a few members in the video, the whole of Sigma Alpha Epsilon has failed to meet the appropriate behavior of a fraternity here at OU, which is why it has been shut down.”
The other University of Oklahoma fraternities, making sure that their reputation is not tarnished by the few deviants of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, have publicly advocated for the purity and integrity of fraternities as a whole, and just wrapped up a full week’s campaign of obscene partying and making sure that everyone knew that they are inherently superior.
